Corn is converted into Ethanol and then mixed with gas at a ratio of 85% ethanol to 15% regular gas to formulate the FlexFuel known as E85. It is identified at the gas station as a yellow pump.

Flex Fuel and engines prepared to run on it have been around for over a decade but is largely still unpublicized. Some car manufacturers have been producing engines that can use flex fuel since 1989. Wheather or not flex fuel is cost effective yet is undetermained, however it usually prices out at .10 cents cheaper than regular fuel.

E85 Flex Fuel made from corn boasts more performance (about 105 octane) and less harmful emmissions, but also lower MPG compared to conventional Gas. Lower by approx. 15%. There are currently 600 E85 gas stations with 120 in illinois. Arlington Heights, Mount Prospect, and Palatine are among the closest.
